Consumption benchmarking brings financial windfall to school

Oasis Community Learning

Oasis Community Learning is a large school academy trust made up of 54 schools nationally. The Academy team work hard to help all their schools achieve the best possible outcomes from the suppliers they work with, and in the summer of 2024 OCL awarded Telex UK the contract to manage their water and wastewater utility contracts. This gave OCL both financial savings and a greatly enhanced service via their dedicated water account management team.

Benchmarking water consumption

As part of the standard service provided by Telex one of the first tasks completed was a water consumption analysis and benchmarking the schools against the national water consumption averages, providing a data set alongside recommendations for schools where consumption was higher than expected.

The data review identified an initial group of schools where water consumption was high or trending upwards and Telex worked closely with Oasis and their facilities teams to complete various investigations and checks.

One school in the East of England with particularly high water consumption was especially glad of the assistance as they had felt for a while that water bills were too high and had not received much support from the previous supplier in in addressing this. The school immediately completed the tests confirming the suspected leak and accepted a quote provided by Telex for a leakage investigation team to attend site and trace the fault.

In August 2024 the leak was traced and a report issued confirming the presence of the leak and the cause. Armed with this information the school team were able to arrange for the water wholesaler to complete the repair work.

Saving money and conserving water

Jessica Marshall, National Environmental Sustainability Manager from Oasis Community Leaning said:

We were shocked when Telex informed us about the potential underground leak and how much water was being wasted each minute of the day. They helped us to act quickly in identifying the source and then getting it fixed. As it wasn’t a visible leak, it went undetected for a long time and just shows how important this type of monitoring is to not only save money, but also water and our carbon footprint, which is a big priority for us as a trust. This is a huge win for us environmentally and economically and we can now use the savings to put towards all important education and sustainability projects. We’re also more aware of what good levels of consumption are across the rest of our academies and can be proactive in managing our water.

Jen Armes, Head of Water Account Management at Telex said:

The whole Telex Account Management Team has a shared aspiration to help our customers save both money and to conserve water. We are so happy with this outcome and would thank Oasis and the school team for their shared commitment in getting to this outcome.
